What
is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade means that producer farmers in developing countries are paid
a fair price for their produce. This means they can afford to eat, buy
medicine and send their children to school.
Fairtrade says that the poor don't need charity, they just need a fair
chance.
What
makes
trade unfair?
Rich countries often
subsidise their produce to sell to the rest of the
world for a cheaper price. Farmers in developing countries cannot
compete and many are even prevented from selling their produce in rich
countries markets.
How can I
make a difference?
Surely the problem of poverty is too big for me to make a difference?
Everytime you buy a fairly traded item you make a real and lasting
difference to the life of one
person and their family. Imagine how it would be if everyone commited
to buying one item
every week.
